Betty Boop
I have finally sent a photo of my truck to Bill, old Betty Boop. She is not -pretty and in fact was in such wretched shape when we pulled her from the water she had been sitting in for many years in a sand pit she would not have even made the Tired Iron photo page. She would have not been even considered a good parts truck, but still I wanted her and what I saw was a finished product that could help teach history in my area. I even ran afoul of the San Antonio Code Compliance people for having a junk truck in my driveway.
Well 6 years later, a lot of sweat, my blood , money and parts from good people like Joel Gopan and a friend in Sweden, this past Monday, July 4 she won 1st place in the parade that had 146 entries. She will not set the purist hearts afire with envy and yes Joel I put the canvas bucket on her just for you( ha ha ) I am still proud of her. I started her re-birth when I was 60 years old and she became a motivating item for me as I fought cancer and underwent radiation every day for 30 days, but I always found enough strength to do something to bring her back to life. I did all the work myself with mostly hand tools. I even fabricated some of the speciality items I needed, like the bracket I made and put on a floor jack to lower the transmission when it was removed.
I have recieved a lot of good advice and information from the web site. Thanks to Bill, Joel, Dr. Duece and others and expecially the parts crossover numbers She can continue to teach the history of WWII.

Beautiful!
I do have to ask, do you have 'before' picture? Sitting in water.....!
I think any time someone like you can rescue and preserve one of these fine pieces of history it inspires others and makes all the research and time and effort the people like Joel and myself put in and the advice we offer all worth while.
They are not making any more of these trucks, but by preserving one more you have slowed their decline!
Thanks

I will send some photos of her right after I got her home and just before Code Compliance forced me to sell my home and buy one in the country so I could re-build the truck without official interference from the local authorities.

I failed to mention the most important contributor to this old truck restoration and that is Jan Bruman of Sweden. He provided the body parts needed for this endeavor. I lost his email address when my computer crashed last year and hope he sees this and contacts me through this site.

HI JIM
I SAW BETTY BOOP ON BILL'S OWNERS OF CCKW'S THE TWO FLAG SET UP IN EACH CORNER IS THE SAME THAT I USE,IT WORKS GREAT UNTIL THE WIND BLOWS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. INSTEAD OF THE FLAGS WAVING IN BACK OF MY CAB THERE IN FRONT.CAN'T CONTROL MOTHER NATURE BUT I HAVE A GOOD TIME! YOUR GOING TO GET HELL FROM JOEL WITH THEM WATER BUCKETS ON THE JERRY CAN, HE GIVES IT TO ME ALL THE TIME. ANYWAY I THINK IT GIVES THE CCKW THAT COMBAT LOOK. ITS TO BAD ALL US CCKW OWNERS DIDN'T LIVE CLOSER WHAT A PARADE WE COULD HAVE. IT WOULD LOOK LIKE PATTON'S THIRD ARMY COMMING DOWN OVER THE HILL, WE WOULD OF COURSE HAVE TO THROW A JEEP OR TWO IN JUST TO MAKE IT LOOK OFFICIAL. ANYWAY GREAT JOB AND KEEP THEM TRUCKS ROLLING.

Thanks for all of the positive comments. I would love to put together a parade of CCKW's and 1 1/2 ton Chevy's just once. That would be something to behold.

Accounterments add class to a vehicle, don't you think? Like longhorn steer horns on the front grill of a 55 Caddy.

Boss Hog rides again. I have a set of replica steer horns on a beam in my barn, a gift from Texas. They will stay there.

Back in the 50s at our New Car dealership, we had a KC-97 Crew Chief , Joda Boley, working afternoons at the Service Station, we had a lot of Local Yokel gasoline customers with Horses on the hood, and foxtails on the antenna. Joda used to comment that backin Kentucky they used "Gooses" on the hood.

I have to ask the obvious question,Do these steer horns have any thing to do with Joel's sore ass? It's not a problem we encounter on this side of the pond as if the cattle are not naturally polled we usually dehorn them as calves.
