MVT National Show Kemble Gloucestershire UK

Post by Degsy »

This show gets better every year, over 500 vehicles attended. WW11 battle re-enactments took place which included Sherman,Chaffee and Stuart tanks and also arena parades of both pre 1945 and post 1945 vehicles and armour including some of the many CCKW's present.I have e-mailed Bill with pics of more than 20 CCKW's that attended hopefully he can post a selection to show what we have on this side of the pond.

Beautiful trucks...... I have never seen winch bumpers modified to carry gas cans like that. I think it is visually appealing but I am not sure I would want 20 gallons of gas attacked to my front bumper if I hit anything. Kind of like hanging mines on the sides of half tracks....seems king of dangerious to me. I have never seen period photos of winch bumpers modified like that.......Joel chime in here and let us know the skinny.

The modification to the winch bumper is quite common over here but I take your point about the'bomb' aspect of it. Incidentally the owner of this vehicle also has a bolster truck and a gas truck with gas tank trailer in his collection, all restored to a very high standard.Unfortunately I don't have any pics of either of them on file but when I get some I will post them.

>>>of more than 20 CCKW's that attended<<<

Sure rub it in that you have all these beautiful CCKWs over there.... :)

If I ever see that many at one event over here it would be a miracle!

I was over there in 1989 and was amazed at the number and quality of your CCKWs.

Yes I have to agree on how lucky we are but of course it is down to Uncle Sams generosity at the end of WW2,but there again I suppose it would have been impractical for a number of reasons to ship so much equipment back accross the pond,we're back to our luck again.

My understanding about the vehicles is they didn't want to flood the US vehicle market. The auto manufactures had been out of the private auto business for about 3 years and the government didn't want to dry up the demand for cars and trucks by dumping thousands of vehicles on the US market and causing the folks that worked so hard to help win the war any further grief.

Thanks Bill on the flyover photo. I have a little over 100 flight hours in a C47 named China Doll. She was the oldest C47 still flying when I was her co-pilot in the early 80's. She was a beauty, but the C47 , other than nostalgia reasons, is not a real fun airplane to fly. Slow and steady but very reliable.
