DEFROSTERS FOR YOUR CCKW

Post by joel gopan »

The Defroster of choice was the rectangular 6Volt electric types that were attached by the 4 Suction Cups. These were used on all MVs and models of the CCKW. They worked great. There were at least 3 different brands, the switches varied as to whether they were a Hi-Lo lever attached to the side of the defroster, or a Push-Pull below the dash. There was a tube of sealer for the cups, that by the 50s was usually dried out, that was for applying to the cup. Some had cups that were just pressed to the glass, others had a knob that when turned, would form a concave surface on the cup. They came in 6V and 12 V versions. They worked beautifully, we sold hundreds to CCKW, MV, and Jeep owners.

WARNING:
Buy these with the understanding that the wires may have snapped off their grids, or the rubber seal along the perimeter of the defroster may be hardened and not pliable, and they will not be installable as the rubber seal will not compress and allow the suction cups to contact the glass. Some makes have retained pliability in the rubber seal. Buyers Beware! I see them on EBay often, ask questions. I have some NOS in the metal boxes (Couple dozen) as Curios only. The answer "All I can say is they are NEW," or "They are sealed in the box, and I will not open them" is a cop out, they know what they have and just want your bucks.
These are all 60+ years old. I have a few good ones, I have saved for display on my truck when it is donated to a museum.

I used these for years when I drove CJ-2A and CJ-3A Jeeps to High School, and as a highway surveyor driving my CJ-5 to the I-95 project in 30 below weather. Surveyors on my crew were not pansys we worked in the cold.

There is a nice looking GI 6 Volt defroster on E-Bay right now, and it is a bargain at the "Buy it Now" price. Look up CCKW and you will find it. The seller is reputable.
