The long term value of a CCKW (or other HMV)

As an off-shoot of my alternator note, the value of a CCKW was brought up. All things being equal, naturally a CCKW restored to factory specs will be worth more than a modified CCKW. The modified CCKW's value will vary depending upon the modificaions; permanent vs temporary and whether the parts to bring it back to its orginal state are available from the owner or the marketplace.

One thing to keep in mind (for me anyways) is that a CCKW or any HMV should be enjoyed. I sure enjoy mine. Looking to them as an investment, especially long term, may be a loosing proposition. Here is why: If you look at the old car market you will see some cars that were popular with previous generations and at older times are getting potentially harder to keep their value to the average collector. How many kids today would like a Model-T? not too many I dare say. They want more modern cars. something they are more familiar with. This I suspect will happen eventually (not tomorrow) with HMVs. As fewer people are familiar with the military, or have a desire for one of these "gas guzzlers", the available buying market will shrink.

In addition, technology may have a big impact upon all collector vehicles. If the US/world went like Brazil did 10 years ago, going on a crash program to get to 100% alcohol today instead of gasoline, the impact could be dramatic! Gasoline would not dissappear immediately, but the price could go up dramatically.

Of course parts will get scarcer. New manufactured parts may become non-existant especially for less popular (compared to the Jeep) HMVs like a CCKW. I notice now where a few years ago I could get a gasket for a 270 engine in a day, I now have to have it shipped in taking a week or so.

Legislation could do serious damage especially to the HMV market and ownership. Think of what the impact would be if a terrorist used an HMV to commit a terrible act of terroism. We have seen propose bans in recent times in the US and France with no good justification or reason.

So I guess my point is to really enjoy your HMV today. Own it becaue you love it. You love its history, its mechanical simplicity and reliablity. Like a child, love them while they are yours to enjoy...

A very thought out article for sure. I am on the fence on modifications and I know opinions vary alot.

One point that is well agreed on and Dr. Deuce stated... enjoy them now!

Here is another thought on the same train of thought. These old beauties, if taken care of will outlast their drivers and owners. As an old geezer it is getting harder for me to drive my CCKW as the double clutching really works on my worn out painful knees and makes me wonder how much longer I can drive the truck. Enjoy it while you are physically able to do so. Then pass it on to another care taker as these old trucks are time capsules from a different time. :D :D

FANTASTIC WORDS FOR WHAT WE LOVE... MY TRUCK IS 24 YEARS OLDER THAN ME BUT SHE IS PERFECT... RATHER DRIVE MINE THAN MY FAMILY CAR FOR SURE... EVERY ONE TURNS AND LOOKS I'D LOVE TO KNOW WHAT THEY SAY!!!!!

Hey Army if it gets to bad for you maybe you could check with the good Dr about installing a M211 302 with the Allision automatic if it is possiable, that would solve your problem for a few more years , now if you could only find a easier way of climbing in and out of that open cab, solution change to a closed cab ,just think of it, you would have a whole new truck :lol:

Allison will not work. If you look at Crismon, you will see a prototype with an elongated hood to move the engine forward. The Allison is longer than the Clark 5 speed....
