When I spoke with Dr D we discuussed what the correct military marking should be on oil drums. The display looks great. Hope the info below helps with correct drum marking.
The military has never used the SAE classification system. The US military has an entire numbering system for "Fuels, lubricants, oils, and waxes" All based on the Military Standard system. MIL-L-2104 is the specification for "lubricating oil, internal combustion engine"
Below are three examples of 1970's 5 gal oil cans with markings for OE-HDO 30 (That's Oil Engine-Heavy Duty Oil) and 10Wt and GO-90 or Gear oil 90 Wt. I'm told that the same marking system in general goes back to WWII. Hope this helps collectors who want the authentic look in their vehicle dicplays. Mil-L-2-104 was the WWII enguine oil spec. Who ever saved used oil drums for us to copy?
