Hey from Conn in Ohio

Post by Conn »

This is Conn, actually we're father and son sharing an account. :D Gordon Conn (father) Michael Conn (15yr. old son) We have just recently acquired a CCKW 353 and a parts truck that we don't think is a CCKW (can't find ID#), after we attended the National Military Vehicles Show in Dayton about a week ago. Anyhow our truck is an H1 (a tipper, however we found it with a lime spreader bed on it  ). We have a bed off a later truck a M211, which is a bit wide, but it'll do until we can find a proper fitting bed for it. We both are very much interested in WWII machines and history, and we're warbird nuts. My father (Gordon) collects and restores vintage pre-war (WWII) tractors, and I (Michael)...well I help out where ever I can. And before you ask, "No", he hasn't allowed me to paint one of his tractors OD Green yet. :D We enjoy this website very much as it has and will in the future provided us with much information!

Welcome to the forum, It's good to see the young generation taking an interest in these old vehicles, they are important historically and without you to carry on the preservation when we oldies turn up our toes I shudder to think what will happen to them.

Welcome to both of you and espessialy to you Michael!! It is very nice to see that there are some new recruits!!
Guess your father is abouth my age (I am 43). I have a dauther that have if not greate interest of MV's she is at least very interested in a jeep I have promissed to put together for here before she turns 18. She have attended in MV rallys for 13 Years, so perhaps she is no longer a recruit...

The truck you are not sure of, please put a photo up here so we can help you out.
And as always, I am very interested in the serialnumber on your tipper! The number goes into a list so we all can better understand those magnificant trucks!

(this is Michael  )
Thank You! I've been interested in WWII aircraft for a long time, and I've always had a little soft spot for vehicles, but now I have a great interest/love for them, and I'd be very much interested in becoming a reenactor as a future hobby! One of the reasons why I like the CCKW is because my grandfather actually drove them in WWII! (along with Jeeps and other vehicles) I've attended many airshows and museums, and I'm planning on vehicle shows now! Well the truck that "we can't" identify isn't a CCKW, but my dad thinks it's a earlier style GMC truck (he has a pretty good idea of what it is). I'd like to add a picture of it, but it's not on an internet source. Here's our CCKW tipper though. She needs some work, but were workin' on her! :) (You can find the ID# and other info. on ours in the database of www.cckw.org, but it's CCKW 353 484755 H1) Enjoy!

Good luck and you will enjoy your restoration process and one day will be able to show it with pride as you drive your CCKW in a local parade. Welcome to the site. This is a great groups of guys and never be shy when asking questions.
I was 15 when I got my first jeep. It was a 45 MB and I have been into military vehicles ever sense. Of course that was way back in 1955 so imagine that jeep was only ten years old when I bought it. Paid $75.00 for it and drove it home. :D

Welcome to the hobby from another young collector (I'm 16). I can speak from experience that it is great being able to work your father in a father and son team. I'm sure you and your father will enjoy working together restoring you CCKW just as my father and I are. That is a great start for a truck and the plus is it still has the original fuel tank :D.

Welcome aboard,
Nick

restoration

Post by Conn »

We have accomplished much on the restoration of our CCKW since our last report. The engine has been rebuilt (which has taken a majority of the time), painted, and put back in the truck. Fuel pump and filter have been added. Air cleaner has been purchased. The rear end has been attached and bumperettes have been added, the carburator and fuel tank have been sent off to be re-done. We have begun some rust removal/treatment/prevention on the body. Many other various parts have been sandblasted and painted and are ready to be added. Check out the GMC CCKW page of my website http://americanbombardier.tripod.com/ for pictures and other updates. It has taken a long time, but the restoration is coming along.

It It lives! We got the truck running today (first time since the mid 70s), we took it for a (very cold) mile drive up the road, and it's running fine! We are now beginning the work on the brakes system $ $. I'll soon be posting some photo's! It sure is great to hear it run!

Well Done Lads!

The boys around here like to say that when you bring a long silent engine (or one you just rebuilt) back to life, It's the closest think to giving birth we men will ever know.

Anticipation, fear, joy and pride all at once.

Keep up the good work. And post photo's.

Here is a link to some photos of how the truck looks after it's first drive in thirty-some years. http://americanbombardier.tripod.com/id46.html We are acquiring new brake parts now, which is the next big step in the project.

Resto Update photos

Post by Cat Man »

Hey Dad and Lad,

Great job. The truck is looking really good. Thanks for the photos.

I noticed that the truck cab has the hard to find special u bolts behind the cab to clamp the legs of a ring mount. That would suggest that this truck had a gun mount at one time. Dump Trucks did have them (lots and lots of them),

The M series cargo bed should look fine until you can find a CCKW one.

Are you guys going to the Columbus Ohio air show in end of Sept. Maybe we could meet there. 100 P-51 Mustangs!

Thanks Cat Man! I need to take a few more photos, because we've just mounted a few brackets and we received the new hydrovac too. Yes, we are planning to attend the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends this September, and are now looking forward to see you there! It should be a great show! http://www.gml2007.com
