The Pacific

Post by Bill_Wolf »

The new HBO Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks mini series about the PTO is within 30 days of release. There are plenty of Movie Trailers available on the HBO website.

This week they started running a half hour special Making the Pacific. It has interviews with the Directors, Cast, and Crew and discusses their thoughts behind the making of the series. It also has interesting aspects of the technicalities of making such a historic film and their dedication to get it as accurate as possible. There is a 3 minute excerpt from the special on the HBO site called "on the set" it is an interesting watch.

On a personal note episodes 1 & 2 deal with the invasion of Guadalcanal. My father-in-law was with the 1st Marine Division, 2 Marines, E-Company. He was one of the company runners. From stories his most remembered incident was the battle for the Tenaru River. I believe that this battle is covered in the film and it will be interesting to see how they visualize it. http://www.vectorsite.net/tw2guad_1.html#m5

As a sister series to Band of Brothers, The Pacific will cover the brutal forgotten campaigns that most of the population know little or nothing about. It is another tribute to those of the greatest generation.

I watched the first two parts of The Pacific up to now. Really very well done! But did you notice one big mistake? The battles on Guadalcanal took place in 1942. You see a lot of CCKW's driving around (painted grass green. Was that the correct colour in the USMC?). There is a closed cab Jimmy. That's okay so far. But more often you can see several open cab GMCs driving around! How can this be? The first open cab GMCs were built not before April 1943 :!:

Chris

Although I have not seen the series yet, it started here in New Zealand last Night, I do have it recorded so hopefully I will have time on the weekend to view it.

I find it interesting about the comments / discusion of the GMC colour and the use of tropical cabs rather than hard cabs, both here and by people I spoke to today. I say interesting as I have a pair of ex USMC 4x4 ACK352 GMC's and over the years that I have had them I havedone many hours of research and have seen alot of photos of the Marines in the Pacific and there are very few GMC's used. The Marines as with the US Navy used mainly Internationals both 4x4 and 6x6 and I have seen many original photos showing this, however I have from memory not seen any GMC's.
Of Course I am not saying they were not used but they are not seen in large numbers in original photos, I am willing to be wrong.
To most people watching the series would not know or care about such details.
Having read several Marine Unit History's I am very interested to see how the early days of the war are shown.

All the best

Kev
