Post by joel gopan »

Anyone remember the real words to the Col. Bogey March?

It is cute, and I used to drill with an Army Band.

The What????

This one caught me...but I remembered that "Google is your friend".

What I found was surprizing.

The "Colonel Bogey March" is a popular march that was written in 1914 by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts (1881-1945), a British military bandmaster who was director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth. (wikopedia)

This is one of the most notable marches ever written.

Made, in modern times, famous by the Movie Bridge over the River Kwai it is often called the Bridge over the River Kwai March. See video excerpt.

The sheet music was a million-seller, and the march was recorded many times. "Colonel Bogey" is the authorized march of The King's Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC) of the Canadian Forces. Many humorous or satirical verses have been sung to this tune; some of them vulgar. The English quickly established a simple insulting use for the tune, where the first two syllables were used for a variety of rude expressions, then followed by "...and the same to you." The best known, which originated in England at the outset of World War II, goes by the title "Hitler Has Only Got One Ball". (wikopedia)

The lyrics, supposedly written by a Brit in 1939 as propoganda, They are:

First Verse

Hitler has only got one ball,
Göring has two but very small,
Himmler is somewhat sim'lar,
But poor old Goebbels has no balls at all.

Alternate First Verse

Hitler has only got one ball,
The other is in the Albert Hall
His mother, the dirty bugger,
Cut it off when he was only small.

Second Verse (used with alternate first verse).

She threw it over Germany,
It landed in the deep blue sea,
The fishes got out their dishes,
And had scallops and bollocks for tea.

I was unable to find an MP3 of the tune with lyrics so you will just have to sing it to yourself.

And the tune, not without its controversy caused this uproar...."Because the film concerned prisoners of war being held under inhumane conditions by the Japanese, there was a minor diplomatic flap in the late 1970s when the "Colonel Bogey March" was played during a visit by the Japanese prime minister to Canada." B.S. it makes the grass grow green, B.S., it makes the grass grow green,......................................

The American GI knows no end to his imagination. Someone else can finish it.

Ain't you glad I was hatched from the greatest generation?

C'mon Folks,
Follow the bouncing Ball!

I just know my remarks have left a lot of youngsters wondering what they have missed.

I just wonder if some GI has come up with a version for the desert campaign going on.
