The GMC CCKW

While digging through some boxes of stuff that have been piling up I came across a little glass salt shaker that looks like a hand grenade,some one had once told me that soldiers would carry them to help thier K rations taste a little better,I've looked on line and on ebay and could never find one like it or any info about it,I found a salt and pepper collector on ebay who confiemed the story I was told,has anyone else seen or heard of these,it's about 2 inches tall and about an inch at it's widest point,I haven't been able to update my computer yet so I can't post pictures,but it's cute and if it's really a WW2 item would make an iteresting addition to my vehicle decoration collection.Any one that would like a picture can email me at rcchell@xpressweb.com Thanks alot Bob

I saw your post Bob and i think this is what your talking about ,i found theses at a yard sale many years ago , i like yourself don't know much about them . The Zippo lighter is there for scale !

Hi Snow Man, Thats what I'm talking about,I found one in a flea market out in Ca. years ago then another set at a yard sale last summer,the old lady at the yard sale told me they were her husbands from the war,then the collector confirmed the tale,makes sense,a little salt would be a welcomed addition from what I've heard about WW2 food conditions. I was thinking like you were Bobc when i saw theses ,they Had to be old and besides this would have to be Politically incorrect now days. The only thing is that there is no way to seal the tops and keep the contents from spilling, doesn't seem practical in the field.

Hi Snow man, I assumed it probably had a cork gasket under the lid,that could smash around the bail and still keep the salt in and water out,but cork exsposed to air would have rotted long ago. At least thats my theory. Still they are cute and if the stort checks out a nice addition to any WW2 collection. Take care,Bob.
