Sunday fun

Post by Nick Bombini »

Well, I just got home from a good day of getting some parts for my truck and helping fellow member Mike (41CCKW) take off some parts for the truck he is working on.

We were going to hold up a sign that had www.CCKW.org on it but we couldn't find any cardboard or a marker.

Ryan,
Chris is going to talk to Joe for me to find out how much he wants for the parts.

I agree, it is nice to see what the people you are talking to look like. The best thing about getting the parts was being able to get out there and work with and talk to people who also share the same passion for the trucks as you. I think we gave Mike od fever too!

Yep I got the OD fever. Now I am making plans to get the 41 CCKW on the road for the Tower event Next April. There is a BIG list of repairs. Freeze plugs, clutch, wiring, brakes, fuel system, tires, the list goes on....

Nick, by the way I didn't want to "scare you off" or anything. Like I said just mainly we like to always be in the loop. I have been less in the loop out there than ever before since I spent the last 3 years starting the roots of my family and now that I am getting back into the swing of things I am just trying to get a handle on everything that is going on out there.

The place comsumes so much time that my dad doesn't always have time to stay in the loop with everything that is going on so I am trying to be a good NCO by keeping the CO informed, etc. I actually have never met you and a lot of the guys who have been comming around the field for the past few years but I look forwad to meeting you guys. I always seem to get this reputation for being an a***hole because I can be a bit direct and too the point but I am just one of those people who pretty much says what is on my mind.

I'm glad to have some good local people out there getting some stuff off of those beasts who can put it to good use and if the musuem can get a couple bucks here and there out of it to pay the bills then even better.

Don't worry, you didn't scare me off at all. I completely understand you wanting to stay in the loop with the dealings out there as I would want to be also if I had to help manage the place. In fact, I'm glad I was able to talk to you on the phone about going out there. I look forward to meeting you out there or at Tower Park one of these days.

I'm actually glad I was able to get the parts from out there as I get the truck parts I needed and the field gets a little money to help with repairs or bills. The only reason I put that little note on there is I didn't want you to think that I was thinking I was getting the parts for free as that wouldn't be right.

I'm sure the place does consume a lot of time and energy as you said as I would imagine the county is on you guys to get the buildings up to code along with all of the other regular maintance work.

SO how many cans of wasp spray did you need to keep yourself from being stung lol. I was out there the other day pulling the carb off of that beat-up old M-2-4 and I disturbed a nest and had to run for my life lol.

Mike,

I just realized on your profile that CCKW is a 352 eh? I knew it was lengthened but didnt realize it was stretched so far.

Yeah it is a shame. It has an extra 2 feet in the frame. We need to get a title worked out for this truck so we can get it on the road.

It sure would be nice to get it back to the orginal length so we could put a bed on it. Of course, finding a bed is mission in its' self. If it was a 353 we could through one of those K-56 Signal Corps beds that we have on it or even modify that M211 bed to look good enough to have fun with.

Ryan, I'm 16. I'm actually going down on Monday to take my test for my license.

As for the 352 bed, you have a chevy 1 1/2 ton bed out there. It is the same lenth and outside width as the 352 bed. It is narrower inside but it would work until you can find a 352 bed and would look a whole lot better than a modified M211 bed and would be much easier to put on.

I was telling Mike that after my truck is done (we are pushing for the end of this month but we will see), I may be able to help get the 41 road worthy and start working on the cosmetics.

Very cool to see some young guys out there doing this stuff. When I was your age it seemed like there was nobody young into this stuff and I was just a kid among a bunch of "old guys" shhh dont tell Jim or you dad I said that lol. Now I am 28 and starting to feel like one of the ol' timers lol. I grew up hunting through junk yards and working on this stuff and like I said I learned to drive in an M135 and a Dodge WC-1 so I was born and bred into this stuff but it is nice to see some young blood coming into the hobby in recent years. Most guys your and Mike's age don't know anything about WWII outside of playing "Medal of Honor" and here you you are building a Duece with your pop and Mike is collecting old US6's and working on CCKWs.

You need to send me some pics of your truck I'd love ot see them. ryanwdavis@yahoo.com.

Ryan,

To answer your question about the wasp spray, Chris brought two cans of industrial wasp spray (if I heard him right) and we must have spent twenty minutes before taking parts from the truck killing wasps. I also wore bug repellent which I believe is why the wasps didn't sting me from the US6.

What you can't see in the pictures I posted is the fenders that we took of the truck for the 41 that Mike is working on. The rest of the truck may be falling apart because of the sulfur, but the fenders were near perfect.

This picture shows just how much we took off (it is the third truck in the row. The truck with the A-frame is the one Mike is working on.)

Man I wish there was someone around here (central Missouri) who had some trucks for parts. It is really cool that there are younger people who are into HMV's (im 27). It makes me feel that these trucks will have a home in the future and not be forever lost into obscurity (sp?) or just in history books. I was at an airshow just this past saturday with my 43 353 and there was a guy there who was telling a market garden veteran that he got interested in starting to do displays and is interested in reenacting because he had fun playing call of duty!! I didnt know whether to cry or be glad that at least he has discovered something about history from it. I dunno but its still cool to know there are guys keeping the hobby alive and that OD fever is going strong.

Agreed g.r. and there is more interest in the vehicles of WWII. I am on the advisory board of a new aeronautical and aerospace museum being planned in San Antonio. We are looking at incorporating WWII vehicles in the living diarama displays of aircraft. For example a C47 with a CCKW backed up to the open door.
Military vehicles from all periods will be incorporated with the aircraft on display, all inside a huge empty mall we purchased not far from Randolph Air Force Base.
More to come later. Keep the OD fever alive.

That sounds like an awesome museum. I would love to come down and take a look at it sometime. If i remember ill take the pictures of this past weekend in to get them on cd of the Mexico MO airshow we attended. We were set up next to the Ozark Airlines restored C-47 and we took some shots of the CCKW and an MB parked in front of it. I asked about some staged "loading" shots but they were getting ready to leave they were on a time schedule. However they did say that we might incorperate the displays together for next year so that is something to look forward too.

We are in the process of purchasing a huge empty mall for this project. The major display will be life size diarama's. We already have an F-86 Saber jet that has been donated. It is flyable at present and going to airshows. We are going to do a life size Mig Alley diarama around it, with an MB/GPW on the ramp.
I will keep you posted.

Please do. We were going to try to form a military vehicle museum in Danville IL a couple of years ago in an old armory. But we never could get off the ground with it and it ended up becoming a now defunct plactics factory which ruined the building. Oh well.
