Austin K4 wheels + tyres

Post by Tyler »

Hi, Can anyone tell me if U.S. GMC 750X20 tyres will fit on my Austin K4 wheel rims, which have 750x20's on them at the moment?

Thanks.

If it has 750x20 tires on them already, then they should fit. 20 inch rims are just that and will handle most any 20 inch tire.

Hi, I didn't know if they were the same as the U.S. 900x16's in that the U.S. 900x16s had 1/2" thicker bead than the British WW2 900x16s (I think) meaning that you had to trim the 1/2" off the U.S. tyre to fit it to a British 900x16 wheel rim.

Thanks.

of course you will have to understand that what knowledge I have is with the U.S. rims and tires. The 20 in the tire size is 20 inches here and could mean something else in England. The 750 is in inches also and I am not sure what that would be in England. It could be that they would not fit. Here, if you have a 16 inch rim, a 600 will fit or a 700 will fit the same rim, talking about jeep wheels.

Hi Tyler,

It does rather depend on the rim. I'm sure the type you have on the K4 will take US tyres but I guess to know for sure you need to try one! that is unless you can find someone who has already done it.

Am I correct in saying that the rims on the K4 have a locking ring rather than the rim itself coming apart?

Tyler you need to know the wheel dimensions prior to knowing if a tire will fit.

While it may fit in diameter it may not fit in width.

Example: You can not safely run a 7.50 x 20" tire on a 9 x 20" rim.

What is the width of your rims?

Tyler as far as I know the 20 inch WW2 rims would take the US tire no problem. It was only on the 16s that it was an issue. I know on the Canadian rims this applies. The difference was in the angle of the bead where it meets the rim. The British (CDN) 16 incher had a 0 degree bead and I think the US was 4 or 5 degrees.
