Earning her keep

Post by armydriver »

Every year I am face with the same delima, and that is cutting down the banana trees( they die back after the first frost) and truimming the palm trees. Old Betty Boop then does what she is designed for, she hauls cargo, even if it is banana tree stalks and palms. I like to pretend we are in the South Pacific with this load. She is normally filled to the top with the cargo and we make the 12 mile drive to the land fill to leave our precious load.
This morning was no different than the drive last year, except it was raining a little, something we need sorely right now. No problems with the trip there or back, just exausting to an old man, unloading all that cargo but I do get some help. The guys at the landfill always get a kick out of seeing a 60 year old truck painted Od show up an they gather around to ask about it and help out. I carry a cooler of sodas in the cab for eveyroe a cold drink afterwards.
Mission accomplished once again and old Betty Boop can now just worry about being in parades and displays until this time next year.

HI ARMY
I STILL USE MY TRUCK HAULING HORSE HAY AND FIRE WOOD BUT ONLY ON MY OWN PROPERTY. MY TRUCK IS REGISTERED ANTIQUE VEHICLE AND THAT AND MY INSURANCE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY HAULING OF CARGO.BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE LOAD OF FIRE WOOD I HAD ON HER,TOP TO BOTTOM FORE AND AFT AND ROUNDED OVER, VERY HEAVY AND NOT ONE COMPLAINT ! . I DO NOT BELIEVE IT WAS AS HEAVY AS A FULL LOAD OF JERRY CANS HAULING GAS UP TO 3RD ARMY TANKS RACING ACROSS FRANCE. MY TRUCK JUST HAD ITS 64TH BIRTHDAY THIS MONTH BUILT JANUARY 1942 AND STILL GOING STRONG ,BOY O BOY DID GMC KNOW HOW TO BUILD TRUCKS :!: .

42CCKW. tell the old beauty happy birthday for me. I love the sound of the engine and transmission when she has a load on her. Makes you realize what an excellently engineered piece of equipment these old trucks were.
