"Army Motors" reader sought

Post by Kees51 »

Hi,

I am looking for someone who has been a member of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association for a while. Specifically I am looking for someone who has the Army Motors magazine #53.

I am writing an article on the history of the GMC for a Dutch magazine. Of course I downloaded the ten part article series by Bryce J. Sunderlin that the MVPA graciously allowed Bill to put on cckw.org to use as a starting point for my story. But while reading it, I noticed there seems to be a page missing from Part #8.

In the scan of part #8 there are three pages. One page is numbered 18, one has no number, and one is numbered 21. From the flow of the story it seems page 19 is missing.

I asked Bill about this, but he said the MVPA provided the scans and he doesn't have magazine #53 himself.

So, could anyone who has #53 check if the scan has a page missing or not? Thank you very much in advance.

ddI will look through my old magazines. I sent a couple of them to Bill including no. 50 but I don't remember the other number. Will let you know if I find 53.

Thanks for that link!

Looking through that site indeed confirms that page 19 of the scan is missing, the Italian version has more text. (Tho it says that part 8 is in Army Motors #54, not #53.) But translating it with Babelfish only gives me a rough indication what the text is about, alas. I'd still prefer a scan of the original.

The Italian site does have much better quality scans of the photographs in the articles, they are full gray scale instead of 256 scale, so that's a great improvement.

When I went to download all the photos from the Italian site, I was worried to notice that it had photos in its translations of the Sunderlin articles that I had never seen before. So I Babelfished all 8 translations and compared them paragraph by paragraph with the scans to see if there were any more pages missing. And alas there were.

The translation of part 1 is much longer than the scan on cckw.org. It has a long chapter on "Enigma GMC - Numbers of series and delivery dates" following the table on page 22. So this would mean we need page 23 and possibly also 24 of Army Motors 47.

The translations of part 2, 3 and 4 each have two more photos than are in the scans. The translation of part 5 has 4 more photos. Then it starts to lessen, the translation of part 6 only has one more photo than the scan.

The translation of part 7 and the scan match up, and the translation of part 8 has more text than the scan, as previously noted.

So it would seem we are also at least looking for Army Motors #47 now. Anyone?

In looking for something else I, of course, found my copy of Army Motors 53

I will scan and get it on the site in the next few days.

Pages of the articles are

22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and the top half of page 28 (which is just a picture of a field assembly of a 270 motor).

Drat. Those are the page numbers of part 7, the only scan that has no pages missing at all.

So it is Army Motors 54 we need, not 53. Sorry Bill.

Good news! Thanks to Jim S I managed to find the email address of the editor of Army Motors and he was able to provide a scan of the missing page 19 of part #8 of the Sunderlin series. I put it online here

Bill has already added it to the PDF file.

The Army Motors editor also sent me the three pages following the Part One article, that are in the Italian translation but are not in the PDF on this site. The story is called "The GMC enigma - serial numbers and date of delivery".

It took me some time, but I managed to convert the pages to a PDF. You can download it here

It is very interesting reading.
