On March 2nd 1910 the first military flight ever made was conducted here at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in a Wright aircraft. U.S. Army Signal Corp aircraft no. one. The flight lasted 7 1/2 minutes and burned up the air at the blazing speed of 55 miles per hour. Three more flights would be made that day by Lt. Fouloise before he crashed on the last flight when a fuel line broke and he lost power.
San Antonio was chosen for the permanant station of the new air section of the Signal Corps because of the year round good weather. From this puny little start came the most powerful air force the world has ever known.
