CCKW MILITARY SNOWPLOW

Post by joel gopan »

There is photographic evidence of CCKWs with snowplows installed at Dow AFB Bangor in the 1951-52 period. The Iowa ANG was stationed there during their federal service and there is a picture of one recorded in the filmstrips at the Bangor Public Library. They were the last AF Unit at Dow to use the CCKW in their Motor Vehicle Squadron, in 1953 the 506 Strategic Wing replace the Iowa ANG and was equiped with the new. M-Series Trucks A CCKW Radio Van and a Chevrolet 4X4 did continue in use until 1961 at the MARS Site at Dow. I can remember the airmen of the Iowa ANG coiming into town to play softball at the Fifth St. Junior High Ball Field and using an OD color CCKW Cargo truck for transportation. They were the last to use the Cletrac at Dow also.

And there were clever Motor Officers/Motor Sergeants back then. The military mods were normaly very functional and well thought, as the military has laws against being stupid.

I always had a lot of respect for old motor pool sergeants. In fact if it had not been for an old experience Master Sergeant I would have been killed in Viet Nam. He had the knowledge and foresight to save a young inexperienced Lt.
