Setting Timing on DUKW 270

I'm doing a complete tune up on my DUKW. According to the manual when the flywheel mark is lined up with the timing pointer the rotor, at 5 degrees BUDC, should be pointing at cylinder #6, not #1. Is this true, that everything is based on #6 and not #1? If so, my distributor is in 180 degrees backward. Thanks for any input.
