Wire Rope For Front Winch
Here are two thoughts about winch cable or wire rope.
It is not uncommon to have some cable damaged out near the working end. The damaged section could be cut off and the chain thimble reattached. I think this may even have been an authorized practice up to some minimium lenght. No one will unspool your winch to measure the lenght. If the drum is not quite full it means it is a working truck.
An alternative and more economical source of wire rope that is suitable for HMV winch use, is the local building elevator (or "Lift" to you lad's in the UK) service company. The wire rope used in the elevators in high rise buildings is replaced on a schedule regardless of the wear factor.
It is always in good condition and very suitable for our needs. They can't and won't advertize it for sale because of the liability if it ever was reused in elevator service, but if asked they will sometimes sell it "AS IS" second hand if you can convince them what you want it for. Check local listings for an elevator service company.
oh ya....it's a secret so don't tell anyone else. Ha Ha

Re: GEIL WINCH
If anyone lives in Tacoma, don't bother with Otis Elevator.
William in parts is *exceptionally* rude, bordering on hostile!
The man at NW Wire rope was friendly, and they have 1/2 for .85 per foot.

Shop around.
If you tell them that you are using if for a display cable on the winch on your Historic Military Vehicle they may sell you take off wire rope for a substantially reduced price.
