Need Ben Hur Brake Cable Bracket thingy

Post by Bill_Wolf »

Finishing up the Ben Hur....

I am looking for the bracket that mounts underneath the trailer and that on one side attaches to the brake handle rod and on the other side attaches to the 2 cables. Kind of looks like a "Y".

The current one I have snapped the mounting bolt off due to rust and I am not sure how it is going to enjoy the "fire wrench" when I try to persuade the old bolt/bushing out.

Pictues of the old one available for comparison.

You must mean the Bellcrank, it mounts on a special shouldered stud just behind the RH Spring. This only fits the WWII Cargo, and possible the WWII Water Trailer. The shouldered stud that broke off, can easily be duplicated in a machine shop, there is a nut on top of the frame that is holding the upper half. Take the pieces to a machine shop, let the shop remove the piece stuck in the Bellcrank. They will be able to copy it for you.

Thank you Joel...Bellcrank sounds much better than Bracket thingy :D

The shouldered stud was frozen into the bellcrank and toasted the nut. I will bring it up to my machine shop buddy and have him have a go at it.

Here's how it went in WWII Army languaqe ,"I twisted off that little S.O.B. that the Bellcrank pivots on". The part was probably stocked as an anticipated assortment of parts likely to be damaged per so many 100 units by the Field Maintenance unit, but I doubt that many of these ever broke in WWII as the trailers were not usually suffering from age.

Thank you for taking the time to respond Citizensoldier

The Bellcrank is a cast/forged piece that looks like a "T" with a whole in the middle.

It couples the brake cables that the auction pictures with the tunbuckle setup at the bottom of the brake handle.

I finally found an NOS one last summer when I bought a whole mess of Ben Hur spare parts from Vermont Commerical Salvage.

Your welcome. You dont happen to have a extra lunnette eye for one do you? I have bought allot of stuff from George at VCS. He is a great guy. I have only bought M37 stuff from him though. I did not know he had Ben Hur parts also.
So far I have found new springs, new axle, eye mounting bracket, NOS landing wheel assembly, and a wiring harness. But the lunnete eye has eluded me.
I also need tail lights and bracktets, reflectors and new set of data plates. Do you have any parts to sell?
I do have the spare tire bracket for underneath that I guess is hard to find. It's my understanding they put this on when it was being pulled by a different vehicle other than a CCKW because nothing else had a matching tire and rim size.

Hello,

Brent Mullins Jeep parts has NOS trail light brackets if you need them. He also has NOS tailgate pins that hold the tail gate close. The pins that attach to the end of the tail gate chains?

The tail lights are the standard issue tail lights. Same as on our WC.

If you are not going to use that spare tire bracket let me know. We are restoring our trailer to tow behind our WC-52 and can use that spare tire bracket.

I am going to make Nash-Kelvinator or Gerstenslager data plates if you have an interest.

The Mullins available tail light brackets are for Steel Bodies only and are dated 1953. I am not sure if they are identical to '40s style. They were the only option I could find and I bought a set for my steel trailer. It is pictured below.

There are plans on how to make the spare tire bracket on the website in the trailer section.

I would be interested in a different dataplate.
