I read this posting and said to myself, there is no boot on a Chevy. I checked the Chev Master parts book and only the cars had a boot and that was for the 3 speed tranny.

My Chev bomb truck had a boot being an open cab and all. The previous owner had removed the rev lockout linkage so the boot would work. I found out you cannot drive a Chev without that linkage. You will hit reverse every time instead of 2nd

There is a Factory tag on these with Chevrolet Part No CV 591380.

The following paragraph is taken verbatum from the ORD 9.

Chevrolet Part Number is CV-591380 LEVER, Gearshift, assembley (same as LEVER CV-591304 with rubber SEAL CV 591379 added)

This tidbit is taken from ORD9 SNL G-85 Dated 1945. It shows the seal as being used on the NQ also.
The levers are sealed in wax with cosmoline beneath.

You can't beat a pro at his own work.
Tell you what I'll do, I will remove these boots as I sell the Levers as I do not want to spoil any misconceptions.

You are correct!

I looked in the Master Parts Listing and the shifter assy is the same on all Chevys. That manual has the seal listed seperately just for the NQ (Bomb Truck) anot as an assembly

The later June 45 parts book lists it as you stated.

Without that seal, you can easily get water into a Bomb Truck tranny.

I wouldn't steer you wrong. It helps to have been around these trucks when they were relatively young, most collectors do not have that luxury, I was lucky, and it helps to have 60 years around these old trucks. Most Chevy 4X4 trucks do not have them, either because they had an earlier date of manufacture than when the rubber boot came out (43 or 44), or the rubber boot dried up and disintegrated. No big deal, they do exist, and there probably was a WWII Chevrolet Factory Service Bulletin about the addition of the CV 591379 seal to the Gearshift Lever.
Many Chevrolet 4X4s suffer from loose or worn pins that the gearshift lever locks into, this will result in a sloppy feel to the shifting lever. Good covers are in short supply.
