Correct CCKW Tire Tool

Post by Cat Man »

Last weekend, I found a shorter version of the double ended tool for removing and installing tire lug nuts on BUDD type wheels.

I know there are several different length tools for different trucks, WWII and Post War M series lugs are the same size. But which tool is correct for the CCKW?

I gathered up tire tools from several trucks around here and became more confused. Here is the collection.

Image

The long tool at the top is GMC marked and is 2281891 and 41W3838-75
(It is 22 1/2 Inches long) I think this is way too long for a CCKW. A similar number is shown in the TM for the 1950's vintage M-211 and M-135 trucks)

The second one is # 5120-316-9217 and is 18 1/2 Inches long
(This number is shown in the M series 5 Ton truck manuals)

The third tool is marked ***40508 KEN-TOOL*** and is 17 1/2 Inch long
(The 2 1/2 Ton M-44 series trucks call for a tire wrench 14 to 16 inches long with an NSN number 5120-00-293-1289)

The forth wrench in the photo is marked 7033474 and is 14 3/8 Inches long?
For what truck?

The 5th wrench is the one I just found. It is 11 3/8 long. Marked BUDD and some faint numbers that look like 22234? This short wrench will fit the CCKW with 7.50 X 20 duals and have room to insert the T handle and still clear the tire. Looking at the other tools in TM 9-801 and scaling it from the picture the short wrench looks like the correct size foir the CCKW.

They of course all fit and perform the same job. I never realized that there were so many!

Note the GMC in the oval logo on the left in the next photo. This is the M-211 wrench. Same as the CCKW number 41-W-3838 except it ends in -75 way too long for the CCKW. I got excited when I saw the "GMC" logo.

Anyone know for double sure what the lenght of the correct CCKW wrench is? I can't find a specified length in any of my CCKW manuals. The correct wrench could be marked 41-W-3838-40. Anyone have a length measurment?

Thanks

The 100% correct tool that came with the truck is marked "2144835" and is 12" long. Look in the ORD9 G-508 parts catalog. I have a couple here. If the tool was lost and had to be replaced, it would most likely have been the FSN Federal Stock Number (ed) tool....41-W-3830-30...(from memory...)
