LISTER BAG

Post by joel gopan »

Makes a good accessory for the Kitchen Truck and Medic fans.
They were a common item of issue in the 40s-60s Army.

Many of you will have no idea what a lister bag is. Reinactors should have one to use, it makes playing soldier interesting.

The Medical Officer is responsible for adding just the right amount of chlorine.

Does the WWII era bag have cast metal spouts or plastic spouts?

Lister bag

Post by retro-roco »

The one that I have, and believe to be WWII vintage has black plastic (almost like bakelite) spigots. The C.O. was "responsible" for the water thath he provided for his men, though as Joel indicated, this duty was often performed by a medical corpsman. I have an officers traiining manual, that goes into great detail on the purification and clarification of water used to fill the lister bag. Unlike our events, where we always use potable water, when in the field they used whatever was available, and took the steps necessary to make it fit for human consumption...

I remember bakelite type material, and believe the bag was WWII vintage. The bag was hung before filling, they are the size of a body pinching bag. We tried to use clean water, but the chlorine was always added. Who the hell knows what crawled into the bag between fillings.
