“…To veterans of today and in the future, it’s important to always let them know they have our support,” said Al Mampre, a WWII paratrooper with Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division—commonly known as the “Band of Brothers.”

Al was honored at Navistar on Friday in celebration of Veterans’ Day.
Al told stories of his training under the infamous Herb Sobel; becoming a medic so he wouldn’t have to carry a gun; caring for injured during Market Garden—including his own wound; and making it to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest. His heroic efforts were recognized with a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, regimental unit citations, and a good conduct medal.

In honor of Al’s service, he added his signature to Navistar’s WWII Clubmobile, a 1944 International Model H-542-9 vehicle with a Kreiger Trailer used in WWII, signed by more than 800 veterans. Al is the first veteran to sign the cab.

Also a Navistar retiree, Al worked as a Director of Training for Chicago International Harvester plants from 1950 to 1978.
