My Grandfather

Stories about fighting in all theaters of WWII. I ask that these be stories directly from veterans and not previously published material.

My Grandfather

Post by Conn »

Lately I've been asking my grandfather about his experiences during the war, and I found out that he actually was an Army driver. He drove Jeeps, Dodge Weapons Carriers, and even CCKWs! He joined the US Army in 1945 and was attached to the 102nd Infantry Division (The Ozarks) dealing with artillery in Europe, and later on became part of the US Constabulary and drove armoured cars and other vehicles. It's been great talking to him about those times. He had four other brothers that also fought in WWII, and it's amazing to hear him talk about their experiences as well! We'll have to take him for a ride in the CCKW after it's restored and let him re-live some old memories! :)

You should try to record his stories and put them on the web site so that the people of today can read them and know what it was like in those times. I did something like that recently on this page:

Just put a mp3 recorder and a microphone on the table and let them tell their stories freely. You can always sit down later and write it down when you play back the recording. If you need help, let me know. Too many stories have been lost already, let's preserve the ones we can now that we have the means.
