Question on WWII Overseas shipping

Post by Bill_Wolf »

Back in the late 60's and early '70's I can remember new Volkswagen products showing up at my Dad's VW dealership covered in a layer of cosmoline. This was used to protect the vehicle during trans-Atlantic shipment. It was in the days of vehicles being "dropped into the hold" and before RO-RO transport ships.

When we sent vehicles overseas during the war were they also completely covered with a film of cosmoline. I know individual components were waterproofed but was the whole vehicle encased in the stuff.

It was always a great time of cleaning the "cos" off the beetles with a mixture of a special solvent and kerosene and then washing it with hot water. Boy was the ground slippery after doing a couple of those.
