CCKW In Viet Nam

Post by Cat Man »

When the French fought in Vietnam from 1946 until 1954 they used American WWII equipment of all types. That included lots of CCKW's.

When we visited Vietnam in 2001 and asked our guide "Are there any old Army trucks around, he answered "Oh yes sir, Gee Em See's", Yes they are very good trucks sir". Seems that any 6X6 is called a "Gee Em See", even later M series trucks. It's a household word.

Here is a photo my father took in 1968 somewere north of Siagon. It's not a great photo and I passed it while scanning some old slides. There was something familiar about it. On close inspection, yup, they are two open cab CCKW's in civilian use. You can recognize the front fenders. The rear axle has been removed and used to build the bolster trailer for logging.

My dad ran CCKW's in Korea and I'm sure that's why he snapped this picture as they rolled past these two.

You just never know where or when a CCKW will show up.
