LEARNING CCKW OR WWII MV-THE FUN WAY

Post by joel gopan »

We could set up a 10 week, 8 hour a day school to teach you all about the 1/4 Ton thru 2 1/2 Ton truck. During that time you could live in a WWII barracks, polish your boots, eat GI chow three times a day and study for weekly tests. After hours, usually on Saturday or Sunday nite, you could go to a pay phone and feed it lots of quarters to call home.
No candy or coffee machines on site, and you will not have personal cars to drive after hours. At the end you will all be ready to go back into the world and will have lost at least 10-15 pounds, your MV will be a better fit. The ugly 1st Sgt has been left out.

Where do I sign up? I would love it, and the 10-15 lbs lost would be an added benefit. I wish I had that much vacation time built up!

What was exciting were the Training Aids. There would be a 6X6 or 4X4 chassis with running gear and engine, and portions of the engine block and gear boxes would be cut away, one classroom had a NOS M-38 on its side with all components stenciled with their nomenclature. The M-38 was dated 1951. there were plenty of exciting filmstrips, and hands on projects such as installing parts, rebuilding the Hydramatic Transmission, Carburetors, Tune ups, Brakes, etc. We had classes on recovery/rigging, and wrecker operation, a week on the DUKW, and operating Jeep engines that were submerged in water tanks.
KP and extra duty such as Guard duty was done. I drove roving patrol to the ranges in an open sided M-38 with no heater during a snow storm in December. The Sgt of the Guard SFC Caron, was with the 716MP and was their Martial Arts Instructor, he used to be a light weight boxer prior to WWII and used to fight the owner of the neighborhood gas station that I grew up at The 716MP 1st Sgt, Tim Mc Caughey, used to be Army Recruiter in my home "Terrible Tim the Tenor", back home. He sang great Irish music.
It all ended with a diploma and handshake by General Sidney Wooten, Post Commander. The Honor Grads, representing each class would march onto the stage to receive their diploma, and a letter of commendation would be inserted into the 201 file.
