CCKW POINT OF INTEREST

Post by joel gopan »

Time has stood still for the SNLs, but has not when it comes to the contents. The SNLs are quickly approaching 70 years.
When you encounter that rare CCKW part, buy it, as the odds of waiting for a better buy will not occur.
After chasing parts on both sides of the Atlantic for 30 years, the "grass is not greener".

Many of the recent overseas GI users of the CCKW have been creative in keeping the CCKWs in service, an have substituted non GMC parts such as, VDO speedometers/guages, M-series switches , lights, mongrel wiring, funny little horns that sound like capons, plastic steering wheels, French Ignition Coils, non original Choke/Throttle cables, odd ball headlights, European, or incorrect replacement reflectors, French closed cab windshields, and French Tricos.
The fun is in finding original parts they come slow as we are 30-40 years late in finding them at surplus dealers.

I hope to set up a site exhibiting the NOS CCKW parts that are on this list.

When I pulled the gauges from my CCKW (European Bring Back - 70s), I noticed the gauges were dead on to the originals that I have in my 41 parts truck.... but they were VDO. If I recall correctly - Germany, 1953 dated on the back. I was lucky to have the correct ones so my search was only over to my shelves

What is with the gas gauge - my 41 has "gas" on the face while the one in my 42 says "fuel" - I have noticed in the manuals that both appear.

Are you talking Civilian type instruments or round military?

Your 41 has been altered, 1941 CCKWs had Civilian panel,
Original AC Guages have glass flush with face of bezel. Bet the guages you are comparing are not both AC.
Does one have raised bezel?

could be the issue. I will look at the gauges later this week since both of them are back in the shop. I will let you know what I find out and shoot you a photo of them. The 41 Closed cab was some where in the 64000 to 68000 range - if I recall correctly. I still have the data plate and will check it out.

fuel gauge

Post by Colin Britton »

Well, I guess my gas gauge in my open cab CCKW that says "essence" is not original than.....
I was wondering why I could not find any reference to the "essence" gauge in any of my Army manuals..... Kidding. :D
The gauge worked so it was low on the priority list of things to do, but it will be done/replaced when I get home.
ATW,
Doc Britton.
