It is normal for the front axle drive shift lever to be a bit stiff when attempting to shift into front wheel drive as the straight cut gears that are on the front output shaft have to mesh with the rest of the gears.
It is even more common for the shift out of front wheel drive to be difficult. It is made easier by reversing direction on loose gravel or applying pressure on the lever while changing directionof travel.
All the above is due to axle wind up.
