SWB EXHAUST

Post by joel gopan »

All CCKW and CCKWX 353/352 SWB Trucks prior to Chassis 41189 had an exhaust system that exited on the Passenger side.
Anyone care to comment why?

Exhaust on eary GMC

Post by svaasand »

They did have the older type Hydrovac mounted outside the frame, maybe the exhaust was routed to the passenger side to avoid interference with the braking system?

Lars is correct.
Many trucks were converted to Hydrovac and the conventional exhaust system. It was a SWB item only and the routing for Banjo was different than that used on trucks with Timken Transfer. I know of no manuals that have illustrations of this system, but many prewar pictures will reveal hints to sharp eyes.
I have both style tail pipes on my shelf. Mark Norman's show winning truck has the Banjo set up with the vacuum assist.

My 1941 CCKW352-A1 still has the original setup. I find it brakes at least as good as the later hydrovac, but maybe not so precise. It also feels like it uses more air.

One of the problems with that earlier setup is that it takes the vacume from the intake by cylinders 5 and 6 instead of in the middle. That tends to make the engine gag for a second as cylinders 5 and 6 get a gulp of air only when you step on the brakes...

Any one could post some pictures of the early exhaust pipe setup. I do have a CCKW352 -37349 B1 - 1941 with vaccun booster on the drive side.
I need to make the pipe from silencer to the back.

Thanks,

Interesting, never heard of the exhausts coming out the passenger side !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a CCKW352B1 Split axle, chassis number is 40*** it has a hydrovac brake unit ( about 18 inches long and 6 inches in dia with the slave cylinder at the front end of it ) on the inside of the chassis rail by battery holder and below the fuel tank on the passenger side and has the exhaust running along the drivers side chassis rail, stepping out to miss the winch pto gear box on the side of the main gear box, then stepping back in to line up with the silencer and out through the tail pipe on the tyre side of the front mud flap on the drivers side.

"If anyone ever needs the original assy, I saved the complete assy from a CCKWX i junked years ago including all the linkages."

Offer withdrawn as it is the same setup on the ACKWX which I have purchased and will attempt to rebuild with this setup
