Hi everyone 2 years ago I joined this site with the question if anyone had put a detroit and auto in a cckw.The answer was no.
So went and did it,and never moved the transfer case. I even used the rear gmc engine mounts. 3-53T detroit diesel 140 hp, allison 545 auto box. The wifey step is on both sides and eletric operation ( for my knee replacements). Complete and full rebuild with engineers report ,full road regestration.

Hi sixbysix, yes it has been fully rewired to 12 volt with H4 headlights so I did not have to use a seperate park light and Yes it is still LEFT HAND DRIVE.

Best thing I had done. You can hook up any thing to it plus it's easier to by lights and things at a service station if driving anywhere.

mine has been 12v for about 60,000 miles driven by me!

I would recommend it to any one. Not pure CCKW I know, but the advantages far outweigh the againsts in my opinion. Easy starting, good lights, telephone charging and of course the ability to run a fridge, then there's the led TV and flashing beacon options, not to mention the loading winch on the rear deck.

It is all reversible should the need arise.

If you do, then the simplest way is to get hold of a single wire alternator, you will find them on eBay. This then only requires a wire from the alternator to the battery, with no other ones to worry about. I use this on the US6 an it works a treat. The hardest part of the whole exercise was making a pulley to take the original sized fan belt.

They sell pulleys for the alternators that feature wide pulleys. Sometimes you have to heat the original pulley because of thread seal locktite. If you do, REPLACE the front bearing. You will thank me in the morning....

You also need to get the alternator base further away from the side of the engine.

Connect the wire to the BAT terminal on the regulator so the ammeter will still work.

On the pulley issue, I simply machined the original dynamo pulley to fit the alternator shaft.
