Lead Picture Information

Post by Fort Susquehanna »

I really enjoy the lead picture change weekly- thanks so much for the interesting photos. I look at the lead page picture every week, and every week I come here to see what is mentioned about the photo. I'm disappointed when there is no info other than the picture available. If the owner doesn't want recognition or identification I completely understand. But I'd really appreciate information about where the photo was taken, restoration, unit representation, history, etc.

FYI, when I get a chance to get the information together, I will send a picture of my CCKW 353H1, with what history I know about it, along with the information about the Engineer Battalion I hope to portray.

Thanks again for the great photos every week!

You have brought forward several great points.

The Picture of the Week photos are pics that have been taken by me or submitted to me by email from a board member. None are just "acquired" from other sites on the net.

I always try to email the sender and let him know that his picture is this weeks POTW. It is his choice to add description or content or not.

Let us hope that your post will generate some interest in following through.

Memorial Day in Bow NH 2011

My CCKW cargo w/M32 gun mount towing the 57 mm Ainti-Tank gun.

I actuallly have a modified picture with the grass by the road fixed and the woman on the RH edge turned into a tree.... :)

Amazing what you can do with an editing program!

Thank you both for the comments and information. I'll only add that the people who made these trucks, drove them, rode them or used them in any way are what make them truly historic. That includes us running them almost 70 years after they were expected to be done. Marking them in units which you know a little bit of history about increases the presence of the trucks at any event and honors the men and women associated with those units. The trucks are stand-alone great, but the generation that created them is just as special.

CCKW-353 bought for $525 in 1981 at a FD auction. Drove it home. It had a water tank on it, no MG mount, and was naturally red. I bought the caRGO BODY IN 1988 for $1000 and had it shipped to the US from France. There are more $ in the gun mount than the rest of the tuck combined!

I have driven it about 60,000 miles. It has consumed about 9,000 gallons of gasoline (through 2 little electric fuel pumps) and I estimate I have spent about $15,000 for gasoline for it! :(

It is my favorite out of all the HMVs I own :D
