Australian CCKW owner

Post by awg »

Great list, I have read all the old posts and learned a lot.

My truck is CCKW 353 with winch and cargo bed, Chassis No 358508-1
dated 3/44. Open cab

I have owned it for 6 years and have some time now to further its restoration

This vehicle previously belonged to Transfield Constructions from 1956-2000.
They had hundreds and this was the last one, it had fallen into disuse as a yard truck with no brakes, or lights and many missing, bent or rusty panels.

I tracked down the head Service manager and he told me he knew this particular vehicle well, that it came from the Australian Army at Homebush , Sydney, in 1956 and "had been rebuilt at least 20 times" since then.

I was able to get most of the parts and restore to Historic road registered
over 12 months of intense work after first getting the truck but have not had the time to finish detail.

I had no knowledge of military vehicles. Looking back, I probably bit off more than I should have, I struck many of the problems discussed on this list, I got some help of the old mil-veh list and Dr Duece, so thanks, it helped, also have found some owners over here and I ask a lot of questions.

Most of the vehicles I have heard of are ex private and were de-militarised in the 1960s, although there might be some recent imports,
mostly you have to do the hard yards and restore. Luckily there is a good parts supplier named Ross Prince in Qld.

I will try to post some photos soon

Unfortunately my truck has had some heavy reinforcement modifications to the frame and winch, other than that I am bringing it closer to original appearance.

Some of the work I have completed includes.

* Replace Transfer case with rebuilt unit
* Replace front axle housing and rebuild
* Brakes
* Lights
* make wire harness
* Dismantle cab and tray, sandblast, paint.

I have taken the vehicle out in various conditions including local roads, the busiest highway in the country, on forest tracks and even a sand beach.

I look forward to sharing more knowledge on the technical discussion page. Thankyou Tony
