Have you ever thought about how much you have spent...?

Post by dr deuce »

Have you ever thought about how much you have spent on you HMV hobby?

The other day, I was thinking about how much gasoline I have used in just my cargo CCKW. It turns out that I have driven it about 60,000 miles since I bought it 30 year ago. According to my calculations, that is about $15,000 worth of gasoline alone! WOW! That is a 18 wheeled gasoline tanker full of gasoline.

Then you add buildings, parts, tires, sandblasting and painting supplies and equipment in addition to the outright purchase of the HMVs themselves. I think most of youthat have been in this hobby/disease for a while would be surprised. I think I have spent roughly between $200,000 and $250,000 on my "hobby."

I would be curious to hear others estimates. Probably no one knows for sure as keeping running accurate totals could be depressing....

I am not saying. I believe my SHAEF may ease drop on this site.

My story is that it is no more than others spend on their stamp collecting, butterfly collection, or quilting hobbies. I am sticking to that.

Next I'm thinkin' about my fuel bill for the upcomming Alcan trip

I'm stopping right here ...not gonna think about it anymore :(

I count my trips to Beltring, Holland and France as vacations. The same with Aberdeen and so on. I never smoked, drink very little if at all, don't play golf or ski. Instead of figuring how much I spent on the hobby I figured out how much I have saved by not doing these things. So far I am still ahead with $$$ by having this hobby, so what have you got for sale?

Haven't calculated the costs really, but on the other hand I never restored a truck so it has been purchasing and mostly having them static around our place, much to the enjoyment of my better half...
About that Alcan trip 2012; me and a couple of my friends would give our left arms to be able to drive a Jimmy to Alaska, but the calculations, even if we would sell the truck after the trip in Canada, are showing painfull results. It would cost as much as a new roof to our house, and guess which is the more popular alternative around here...
Colleagues suggested doing the Alcan with old army bicycles, they are such a helpfull bunch of guys.

The head-scratching and calculating goes on

I've been keeping a log of expediture since buying my 352 at the end of July this year. On reflection perhaps this isn't a good thing to do for my sanity (or marriage for that fact).... LOL

Ignoring the aquisition cost (which includes petrol to get the vehicle home), I break the expediture down into the following categories:
Annual: Insurance, Recovery Insurance, Tax etc
M&S (Material and Spares): Stuff like paint and oil to consume and parts to Embody.
Equipment: Tools etc.
Value Added: Major kit that enhances the value of the vehicle.
Labour: Pure Labour cost. Paying other people to do stuff.

Included in the figures below is kit that is on order and is due to be paid for this month

Against those categories we have:

Annual: £ 240
M&S: £ 568
Labour £ 207
Equip: £ 106
Value Added: £ 1,348
Fuel: £ 274
Total £ 2,743 (Gulp)
