Pioneer Rack

My truck has holes on the driver's side side engine cover for a pioneer rack which is no longer present. I don't want to put it back there because I want to get at the engine without any trouble. I considered mounting it on the headache board (I own a tipper) but welcome any other ideas on where to put it.

I had the same issue with the Pioneer rack mounted on my 353. It is an open cab Norwegian return.

My 1945 build had the original mounting brackets for the tools below the cab opening. I put them there and used the pioneer rack on another vehicle.

I remember seeing a period picture of the rack mounted on the head board of a tipper just to the rear of the driver opening. It was mounted vertically.

Of course I now can't find the picture.

Bill,
Thanks. I have a hard cab on the tipper which I am leaving in place. I was thinking of putting the rack on the headache board on the side which faces the bed. The problem with that is it would be facing the top of the cab on the downward side when I have the board up for tipper operations. If it fit between the cab and bed on the passenger side vertically, I'd put it there. I don't think it can go on the driver side because the tailgate latch operating handle is there.

My 1945 (ex French Army) 353 has the same mounting brackets below the cab. I wonder if all 1945 built CCKWs were equipped with them. Nevertheless this seems to be a rare installation. I have seen very few trucks with this configuration. One side fits the shovel. The other side fits axe and mattock (disassembled).

Chris

Folks

There is an interesting snippet in Bryce Sunderlin's article on the CCKW main site.

http://www.cckw.org/pdf/CCKW_Part_7.pdf

Section 7 Page 4 on the right hand side in where he talks about the "Pioneer Rack". I could not find anything about when the brackets were factory installed below the openings on the open cab in this serious of articles, although I may have missed it.

So...It looks like you can place the Pioneer Rack just about anywhere you would like as it was a field upgrade.
