strange rims
I just drug home a 42? G-506, I was blowing up the tires today so I can move it around and noticed that one of the rims was not the standard CCKW type rim, it has more of a curve to the spokes,I found one other of these on one of the CCKWs I drug home a couple of years ago, the guy I got them from had a US-6 so I was wondering if maybe thats where this different style came from? I can get a picture if that will help. Thanks Bob.

Re: strange rims
I have some of them too. They may be an early design.
I refer to them as bus wheels as I have seen that type on large (old) busses.

Re: strange rims
Variations of this wheel design were in "civi" service long before the "war" and long after as well.
There were numerous manufacturers, therefore you would expect differences
Just gives you 1 more item to hunt down for that "correct" restoration
Hope this helps

Re: strange rims
Ah this one again, so this poses the question, what do people think or know is the right sort of wheels to be fitted on a CCKW ?
Don't say can't as anything is possible with time and effort.

Re: strange rims
Of the 5 CCKWs and two G-506's that are in or passed through my yard I have only seen two of these wheels, the US-6 showed up without any wheels so I can't say if maybe these were the wheels from it, I couldn't see any dates on either wheels so I can't use dates to determine what they came on, theater pictures would be the only sure source but how often do you see a picture of a rim!

Re: strange rims
Always amazes me how much of this sort of thing is unknown, considering these vehicles have been about for 60 odd years surly someone out there does know, I am quite new to this 12 years of owning my 352 and still learning ?

Re: strange rims
I have some extra CCKW rims. PM me if someone needs some.
Could probably get them to the MVPA convention in Topeka this July if that helps.

Re: strange rims
I have one rime (somewhere) that will NOT fit on a slpit rear axle because the hole in the middle is too small!

Re: strange rims
I have a CCKW style wheel but the centre spoke / hub mounting plate on it is much thicker than a ordinary wheel, must be over a 1/4 inch thick. What would that have been fitted on, same off set and stud holes ?

Re: strange rims
This bolt pattern was a standard on 2 ton commmercial trucksfor many years, which is probably where the thicker rim came from, or it could be later M-series, they seem to be more substantial,I have a couple M-series trailer rims that look much beefier then the CCKW rims.

Re: strange rims
This week I was out in the yard trying to find some good brake parts on the parts vehicles, I had to get into the drum that had the other one of these rounded style rims, it was in really good shape so I was able to read the date on it, 6-41, since I have two 41 CCKWs in the yard there is a good chance this rim may have come from one of them, neither of these vehicles were over seas returns, they were both bought in the late 50's directly from the military so they didn't go through a bunch of civilian hands because the families I got them from are the ones that bought them, these people don't get rid of very much, but until someone comes up with a good factory photo that shows a truck with these rims there is still no way to tell!

Re: strange rims
I have a similar wheel on my 43 open cab. the wheel is dated 3/41.
I have heard this was the type of wheel used on the CCKWX, which coincides with the dates of wheels posted.

Re: strange rims
That sound plausible since one of the 41's is a CCKWX!

Re: strange rims
Look them over carefully. It has been my experience that they tend to rot more than the other type due to the tight area where the center part meets the rim.

Re: strange rims
I feel sorry for you folk that live in the soggy areas, out of all the rims I have had go through this place I have only ever seen one that was rusted out at the rivets, I've had more cracked through the bolt holes, some even welded, that just gives me the creeps when I see a welded rim! I've talked to too many old tire men so I know what they can do when they let go, and thats when they are in goos shape!
