I have noticed that some CCKW motors do have a lower oil pan. Probably a silly question, but why this difference in oil pan size?
Thanks

Re: Different oil pans
Its to increase the engine oil capacity , I recall it being an upgrade to deal with the severe off road angles the GMC could get into and allow the pick up to be starved of oil.

Re: Different oil pans
This answer appears in the GMC CCKW Service Bulletin book dated 1944
Bill
(I don't have the time right now but in the next few days I will scan the 10 page bulletin in pdf format and place the link here)Bulletin No. G-61
Subject: Deep Sump Two-piece Oil pan and Oil Cleaner
A new design deep sump tow-piece oil pan with removable sump and a pre-cleaning oil cleaner is now used in production on 270 engines for 6x6 and 6x4 army trucks. The first engine to have these parts was serial No. 270-266551. The new oil pan provides space for an improved oil cleaner and also lowers the oil level in crankcase. Lower oil level permits vehicle operation on steeper grades without the possibility of connecting rods dipping oil. Deep sump is not intended to increase crankcase oil capacity; in fact, deep sump oil pan requires less oil than previous type.
This bulletin covers installation of the deep sump two-piece oil pan in place of former shallow type pan on vehicles now in service. Removal of new parts and maintenance is also explained.

Re: Different oil pans
Thank You Bill I was only partly correct regarding operation on steep angles but not the reason why for the conversion . I take my seat at the back of the room and pay better attention .

ABN,
Stay up front with the rest of us because I assumed the deeper pan for the same reason as you.

Re: Different oil pans
Well, thanks everyone. I must say that I'm impressed. We where a few Danes wondering what the reason could be, but now we can put this issue to bed.
Thanks again
