Where can they be found?

Post by armydriver »

I have the only restored running CCKW in the entire San Antonio area. That is sad as 2nd Infantry Division trained here at Fort Sam Houston before going to Europe, as did 3rd Army. There were 4 Army Air Force bases here also that used these beautiful trucks on them also.
What area of the country can most of these truck be found? I notice from the G 503 that there seems to be a good number in California and Pennsylvania. I am just interested as I really enjoy my truck, even though I have restored 5 MB/GPW's and also have a 41 GP in restoration at present. This is the initial post here so lets Keep Em Rolling. :D

There are lots of CCKWs all across the US. Yes there do seem to be a lot of CCKWs in PA but up here in the Northeast, we are finding more and more people restoring them. I personally have 2 restored right now and will be starting on #3 this year (hopefully) with 3 more after that.

If you look at www.mvmvc.org you will see 5 CCKWs all but one restored at our rally in NH last summer. In addition, there were 3 military Chevys.

This year, if the site administrator get his butt in gear, there will be one more this summer.... 8-)

I agree with you that it is a shame that more people don't have these fine trucks close to bases where they were used. Up here in the Northeast, most of the bases like Ft Devens are mostly gone now, so we don't have the historic places to enjoy and maybe display our HMVs at.

Where the trucks are?

Post by Chris T. »

Hi Everyone,

Yes, we have alot of CCKWs here in California. Why? I think the buildup to invade Japan is a big part. Then there's the large military bases. But the biggest part is farmers never get rid of anything till they think it's total scrap. Near here there's a farm with 28 CCKWs, 3 Chevys and some WW2 trailers. ONLY half of the CCKWs run, but the harvest comes, they load 'em up and out to the fields they go.

OK, I sent a photo to Bill. Part of the farm's "junk pile". How many junkers can you spot? :)

Thank You! They have SWB/LWB, early to very late trucks. The farm manager says the days of the CCKWs on the farm are numbered. :(
But, when that day comes, I try to find homes for the salvageable ones.

If anyone wants closeups of the junkers, let me know.

Well, come the better weather....

Post by Gordon_M »

... you can't cross a street in Europe without hearing a 270.

The French and Swiss armies had a big pile they rebuilt and modified, but the biggest pile around was in Norway where the army kept them original and working up till at least 1990 - I was there and saw them on exercise.

At the minute the Dollar is pretty low against all the European currencies, but when (if?) it bounces back a few more GMCs will find themselves in containers heading stateside.

Forget about restoring them. Clean and paint and that's it...

Hi Guys, We have alot of CCKW's here on the Arizona Utah border. I just bought 4 from the same rancher,3 closed cabs and an open cab,the open cab and a winch model closed cab are supposed to run,I'll find out this week.Around here alot of old military stuff was used by the saw mills after the war,I have identified parts from 5 halftracks and all the cckws I bought were ex-saw mill trucks, there are dozens of trucks between the south border of utah and Salt Lake City area,I spent some time wondering through some of the small towns and it's amazing how much stuff is laying around,of coarse there are no beds on anything but most of time the cabs are complete. Tracking down the owners can be tough but most of the folks are friendly and willing to talk. I'll keep you updated on progress,I hope to try to get the running ones running this week and hopefully home. Thanks for open this site,it's always good to have a vehicle specific forum.Bob.

Man you are lucky. The truck I have should have been a parts truck, but it was the only one in the whole area. Part of our problem is rust here. Wet, with a lot of influence from the Gulf of Mexico with salt in the air and I guess the ones that were abandoned just rusted away. Great find.

CCKW rescue update

Post by bobc »

I was finally able to get into the trucks yesterday,I got the open cab and the winch model closed cab running and moving, they are blocked by alot of junk so I couldn't get them out but I was able to get some info, all the data plate are on all the trucks thier dates are,12-16-40,1-43,5-43 and 6-45 thats the open cab. The winch model has the bed floor on it and the spare tire carrier is still there,so I have a good chassis to build on.Now if the weather stays clear I should be able to get in next week with a backhoe and clear the junk and get the truck out and home.

Is it the early one you're taking?

Post by Gordon_M »

If you had the choice, the 12/16/40 truck would be the one to have.

I don't know of anyone else with a truck that early ?

CCKW's Everywhere.

Post by joel gopan »

The woods here in Maine are full of abandoned CCKWs, none that I would want to tow home, though. (father time has taken its toll) My family sold hundreds from 40s thru 60s. I chased around Maine for years in the 70s-early 80s for "that right truck", and decided not to restore a modified truck. I contacted Seymore Sinett at Supreme Surplus, he was one of the original big Surplus Dealers in the USA, we had bought parts from him since 1945, or 46. I had him bring me a clean intact CCKW SWB from Denmark. That was in 1983, and I have had a ball with it. I had saved NOS CCKW parts for the time I would own one, and it resulted in truck that looks good, and performs exactly as the Army specified.
