Good Morning Jim Seavey

Post by joel gopan »

Jim is a friend of mine here in Maine, he has a sweet 1942 CCKW 353 LWB that was returned from Norway by Manny Rogers. Jim is sort of quiet. I am sure he has a lot to say about the CCKW, Jim is looking for a Wooden Steering Wheel. Hey Jim, C'mon In!

This is the Wheel on ebay (#6519357994) that Corné is referring to.

Joel,

Is this the correct wood wheel.

My CCKW and Chevys do not have the rivots and reinforcement in the center area like this one does.

When did they go away from Wood Steering wheels on Open Cabs?

Bill

Wood Steering Wheel

Post by joel gopan »

The Wooden Steering Wheel replaced the OD colored Hard Rubber Wheel sometime in 42. yours is my favorite one that has the spokes rivited to the hub, with round headed rivets attaching the wood. The other type of wood Wheel has a heavier wooden wheel and is attached to spokes with diamond shaped rivets. (am I correct?) I have not noticed the other type for a while, but it looks to be out of the 1920s. The pic is of a CCKW wheel and should be around 19"OD. There is a 16" or 17" version, the less knowledgeable experts used to claim it was DUKW, that is not so. The smaller is for the CMP pattern trucks that were made for the British empire. Good luck with it I have been looking and so has Jim Seavey. You out there Jim?.

That makes two styles with Round Headed Rivets and one with Diamond headed Rivets that I can identify with. Over the years, noone really cared to observe these differences on the trucks, but it is an interesting topic now. Anyone got a wood wheel for Jim? He kind of wanted the one on E-Bay.

Remember, the wood was painted OD back when they were new. I kinda like plain with some Raw Linseed Oil rubbed on.

E-bay is a love/hate relationship.

What really get me going is that people actually use e-aby to set the going price for thier items. BUT most non-collectors see it as the quick and easy way to sell something that they know has some value without getting to deep into the minutia of what they are selling.
