Electromagnetic CCKW

Fernando,

How interesting! Looks like a magnet rig for clearing FOD (Foriegn Objects and Debris) from roads. Never have seen this picture before.

I have read that as the bombing and shelling continued during the war, one of the lesser reported but very serious problems for the Allies was the amount of tire damage and punctures from sharp shell fragments left on the roads. Rubber for tires was a priority raw material.

I would assume the rig in this photo was an attempt to clear important supply routes, keep convoys running and to save tires.

What book is it in? Is there any more information about the equipment?

Thanks

"Road sweeping" was a common practice started on the Red Ball Express routes. This came about in late '44 when the Transportation Corps reported tyre shortages of 180,236 when the stock holding total was only 50,000 in the whole of the ETO.

By January 1945 the lack of tyres was so great that there was a deficit of over 250,000. In desperation all 1 ton trailers and 1000 other vehicles were dead lined, for lack of tyres.

One of the major problems of tyre losses was not overloading of trucks, or the pressure to "keep em rolling" but the discard of ration cans indiscriminately thrown out of cabs as drivers ate on the road. To counter this engineer corps made magnetic sweepers attached to the front bumpers of Jimmies to sweep the roads ahead of the main convoy.
