Seat cushions?

I need driver/passenger seat cushions for two open cab CCKW's and one DUKW. Where do you guys get yours and how much do they cost?

Do you have any originals that you can recover? That is the route I went. I don't remember the cost of the cushions by themselves off the top of my head since I purchased the cab top at the same time but it was a few hundred for the covers and materials for the bottom and the top cushions.

I didn't have originals to stzrt with so I purchased some dense foam and covered my seats myself using a plywood bottom and heavy canvas I got from a local canvas shop. My trucks are open cab trucks so covering the seats is easy.

We have been getting canvas from New Life Canvas. Mona is the new owner - she bought the business from the former East Coast company and location and has moved it to Minnesota. She is doing good work.

A set of replacement covers for an open cab CCKW is $150.

As a tip, from an earlier thread here, the CCKW seats are too low for most GI's. Many of us (and the GI's) throw an extra cushion on top of the regulation seats to get up higher. You see these extra cushions in period photos. I set a bottom section from an extra M35 drivers seat in my CCKW. Sets me up just right. But I have a short 5'6" wheel base.

Today I bought $100 worth of foam (would have been $200 but I caught it on the last day of a 50% off sale) to make seat cushions for two DUKW's and one CCKW. I cut the plywood as well, 3/4" thick for the bottoms and 1/2" thick for the backs. How are the back cushions attached to the seat frame?

I just ordered the canvas from McMaster Carr. Another $60.00.

Grand total so far:

$100.00 -- foam
$60.00 -- canvas
$0.00 -- wood (recycled from knocking down some walls inside the museum)

$160.00

Already have the staples and such. So, looks like I'll have $160.00 invested at the end of all this to make seat cushion sets for 3 vehicles... not bad, I don't think.

backs on the CCKW do not use plywood. They are about 2" thick with a piece 1/4" rope sewn incased inside a piece of canvas and this piece is sewn into the top seam of the cusion. Slide the rope welt into the metal channel on the back seat frame and walla you have a back cusion that hangs for comfort.

Great thread guys and one that we have all suffered from time to time and one that I recently rectified.

My seat was worn out to and was pretty much flat - I am 6' but couldn't see to much out of the windscreen.......! So I had some made by Allied Forces based here in the UK and I asked them to make to the foam that they used 5.5" deep - absolutely perfect for me and can now see the winch bumper. Happy!
