Would you participate in a U.S. amphibious rally?

Post by Manny Rogers »

There is a group of Amphib lovers in Europe who hold a rally in a different country each year. Members of the group have asked whether such a rally could be hosted in the U.S.

It has been suggested that a "U.S. National Amphib Rally" could be held in the summer of 2008,at Evansville, Indiana, at the home berth of LST 325, the last operational WWII, LST. MVPA member Kenny Adams is on the Board of the LST 325 Museum, and says they are willing to collaborate in the event, as apparently is the City of Evansville.

Kenny talks about Loading the amphibs present onto the LST and cruising up the river to stage a landing re-enactment. Some of the tourism officials there think an event like this might interest USA Today and the History Channel, etc. Such an event could be great publicity for the preservation of amphibs and military vehicles in general and a once in a lifetime experience for all who participate.

The biggest success factor is getting enough American amphibs to participate. A number of Europeans will come, but few could afford to bring their own vehicles. Both military and civilian amphibs are welcome, regardless of vintage.

For this event to succeed, we need to know that at least a dozen operational amphibs will participate. If you are reasonably certain that you would participate with a vehicle, please E-mail me at mannyr@earthlink.net by June 28, 2006, so that the numbers can be given to the group meeting in Italy the first week of July. Questions or suggestions are also welcomed.

Sincere thanks,
