Split axle type seals used on early Chevys

Split axle type seals used on early Chevys

I just discovered (never noticed it before) that early Chevys, I assume Y models had front axle inner wheel bearing seals that worked like the ones on the split axles; inside out. That means that you have to force the seal onto the spindle and the felt/leather part rides on the inside of the hub!

They were apparently replaced/superceded by the normal seals whic could also explain why the current ones apparently have no modern replacements.

I understand that Frank Rosen* from Canada claims to have some new manufactured ones. Has anyone tried them?

You sure about that? The Chevrolet Model 30 and 31, 1 1/2 ton 4X2 had a Felt front wheel seal, but that was 2 wheel Drive, where did you find your information? This is a new one for me all I have ever seen is the 3665138 (5109) seal on the front hubs of Chev 4X4 and the similar Banjo CCKW front hub.

I have a manual stamped (not printed) TM10-1431 Bid # 2-2810 models 41** (different ones)

It has a supliment in the back. Page 3-2 of that suppliment figure 5A shows the seal and the manual text describes how to install it like a split axled seal.. The picture is clear, this is an inside out seal like the split axled trucks.

Split uses a felt seal sandwiched by two retainers. Are there part numbers for what you saw. It is hard to believe that the Timken parts for CCKW will be exact fit. M5H6 also used the felt seal mounted on the spindle. Gotta comment that after 60 years of back yard mechanics, that I doubt that the mating surface of the surviving Banjo hub will be compatible with a felt stationary seal. More comments to come in a day or so.

I believe that the manual lists a 1st, 2nd, and last (current) front axle seal.

Well, Ill be dipped in WB grease, I was on the run this AM, and off to what was hopefully a happy ending to a 36 year one sided battle with the VA. But when I sat down tonight, It came to me that the Split and Banjo share the same front wheel bearings, and it can work. It is never too late to learn. As long as the seal surface is not chewed up from 60 years of wear and tear, it is a good solution. I have plenty of DUKW Seals that I sell in place of the Obsolete National 6109 Front seal, and these will also work.

The DUKW seals will not fit a Banjo truck (CCWW). The DUKW spindle is different.

What I have been doing with DUKW seals is to literally file them (the leather) down a bit till they will fit over the spindle step with a bit of pressure. If you don't do this, you will never get them on. The clearance to the spindle is tight, but they do not hit. As they are only to keep grease in and dirt out, this works. I have done this for about 4 years now.

BTW the 6109 part number will not cross onto a new part number. I have a couple 6109 seals that are very different. I have not found a replacement for this Banjo front seals
