Hi Roco can you tell what the horse head stamps mean ???? Thearly i cannot find at the moment any stampings on the chassis rails but i have found numbers in the glove box they very hard to read as they are very worn . It looks like... 1 NK 24 5837. This i believe is 1942 ???? and are the same numbers that are on the plate.
On speaking with the previous owner who had her for over 30years, in which she was in a museum for most of the time,. he told me when they got her she had extra pipe work and a chamber of somesort which was fed from his memory from the hydrovac. The pipes and chamber was corroded so they took that away and disposed of :( :( .
My truck looks different from Thearly's as mine looks shorter and there is no where to install bumperettes, also he looks in the first pictures that a side tank was installed.
I know things do get changed post war as these babies were used for years after.

no thats a military dash you have.
chevy G7113 never had bumperettes, some gargo versions where converted to be tractor's after the war, overall length of a chevy G7113 is 206 inch. original chevy gas tanks are between the frame rails not on the side.

When you compare the photos of the original tractor truck aganst a later cargo truck to tractor conversion you can see the difference in the location of the 5th Wheel and the lenght of the frame rails at the rear of the trucks.

The tractor frame rails are almost even with the rear tires. On the converstions the frame rails run aft past the tires another 18 inches.

We have talked about this on the site before when someone asks about converting to a 5th wheel arrangment. Now we have pictures to compare.

I really like the tractor trailer combination. That would be fun to show with a little Cat D-4 dozer on the trailer! (you knew I'd say that.....)

Cheers

Well the GMC engine will be an improvement. My old K43 Telephone Truck had the GMC 270 in it and went very well. It is now disguised with a cargo body and blue paint from post-me TV fame in "Darling Buds"

I'd stick with that cab and fix it. Some GMC cab bits bolt straight in, like the windscreen, but if I remember correctly the cab floor front is different, as well as the obvious other metal bits like running boards, engine sides, and grille.

Keep the engine - fix the cab. If it has early civvy pattern instruments the only place I've seen those loose is Norway, or the dealers that bought up ex-Norway stuff.

No problem Kevin. I've seen my old truck too, walk past it most years when I'm down there. Rather take the M26A1 away home tho'.

Your new Chev - did he keep the Chev four speed or put in a five speed?

the four speed was fitted to my Chev and worked well, as you don't need the length, size, or weight of the GMC transmission.
