Chevrolet 4X4 in Civilian use.

Post by joel gopan »

At the end of WWII I remember several in use here in Maine by the US Postal Service. They were used by the shops that repaired the Postal Vehicles. I remember many 1 or 2 Ton size Postal Vans with wood spoked wheels being towed by the Chev 4X4. This was 1945-1947, there were still trucks from 1930s in use. Many Towns and Contractors used the 4X4 Chevrolet to plow Town Roads. The Chevrolet 4X4 had a weak spot, its chassis from a point forward of the Engine. They would break under the stress caused by extra weight of snowplow. Has anyone ever noticed broken and welded frames on 4X4 Chevrolet Trucks they have seen?

I have seen quite a few Chevys with cracked/welded frames by the front cab mount/rear engine mount.

In my opinion, they heve too many rivet holes too close to each other in that place. They could have combined the two mounts using the same rivet holes. They must have seen this in the war.
