transporting the Chevy 1.5 tonner

Post by daveyboy »

Do any of you out there transport, rather than drive, your Chevy cargo 1.5 ton trucks?

If so, I would like to hear about your trailer and tow rig.

I own a mega cab 4X4 Dodge hemi powered truck (basically a 3/4 ton truck under the 1500 series badge, so its a 3/4 ton truck for all intents and purpouses)

I used to haul a 3/4 ton command car on a very HEAVY duty equipment trailer that I rented, generally reserved for construction tractors and such, and I had no problems.

Thing is, the CC was about 6200 lbs maybe TOPS in weight.

The Chevy I am getting should be in the 8K lb range. (NO winch, but with dump cargo bed)

I have always just rented a trailer. I am considering purchasing a trailer now to tow this truck places that I dont want to drive it too.

Anyway, do you all think a heavy duty trailer (Dual axle, 5K rated each axle, 6 lug wheels etc) , 18 ft long car trailer, with flat deck and regular class 3 hitch with 2" ball can do the job?

Electric or surge brakes as well of course..

I KNOW the equipment trailer worked for me.. However, it was really HEAVY just by itself , and added much weight to the towed amount.

I am thinking a lighter trailer, yet robust enough to handle the 8000+ lbs of the truck would be better for me.

I MIGHT have one lined up hence even talking about the trailer of this size to begin with.

Anyone with experience I would love to hear from you.

Thanks, Dave

I haul mine with a GMC 1500 HD, towing a 6 ton rated equipment trailer, with a class 5 hitch, electric brakes.

I have this same issue.

I am at then northern end of most of our club events. At 35mph it is 2 hours 1 way to get to most stuff in a hot noisey truck.

So to carry my 1.5 ton Fire Truck and CCKW I bought a 1 ton dually and a 32 foot goosneck trailer.

I did so because I found that towing a 10,000 pound truck on a trailer that weighs 4-6K pounds puts it over the specifications of what any 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup can tow.

I bought a 27 + 5 24,999 lbs gooseneck. 8 tires on the ground with ramps.

Nice rig and well balanced.

It will have it's initial recovery operation this coming weekend by going to get the beautiful Marine Corps CCKW that Dr. Deuce is going to chop up and part out.

Watch of pictures in a new thread.

It was not inexpensive...but...it did extend the travel range of my Chevy Fire truck and CCKW to anywhere in the US and Canada. I venture it was worth it.

I have discussed this before. I am at the northern edge of where the club activites are. At 35 mph you can't go very far in a WWII vehicle. That puts me a minimum of 1.5 hours from where it is all happening.

Just don't tell my SHAEF!
