Gas tank on G506

Post by Tankjeepman »

I am looking at buying a 42 G506. It has a replacement gas tank on the left side. I can't find any clear pictures of where the gas tank belongs. I could also use some detailed clear pictures from all angles of a good restored one if someone wants to show off theirs.

I am assuming you are asking about a cargo version , if so....
The gas tank belongs between the frame rails behind the transfer case
Hope this helps

Here is what the fueltank looks like on my Chevy fire truck.

The pipe with the rusty flange in the the foreground is the water feed from the removed FD watertank that feeds the front mounted pump.

The fuel filler is in the extreme left of the picture right near the cab on the passenger side.

Gas tank for a G506

Post by Tankjeepman »

Thanks for the pictures, it helps alot. I am going to buy the truck. It is very resotrable with the engine already rebuilt. The bed on the truck has a 1945 data tag on it. It has a door on the back that looks like a tool box, but the inside of the box is mostly missing. What kind of storage compartment is this? I assume that the box should be bolted to the frame only as this one is welded in front? So I need a gas tank with filler tube and a wiring harness to start if someone has these items.

The tool storage box is attached to the body, not the frame

Yes, the door is attached to the body. Is there suppose to be a sheet metal box for the tool box? The one I saw the box was missing.

Vintage Wiring of Maine has brand new harnesses avail.
They are EXACTLY as orig, custom made modern wire with the jacket color and tracer just as original.( cloth covered) includes all the connectors for the lights and switches and a wiring diagram with instructions .
These harnesses are a perfect fit and simple to install ( every wire is numbered just follow the instuctions.)
Joe can can customize the harness to add directionals if you want. He also has the original type battery cables with ends avail.
Beleive me you won't be disappointed.
Hope this helps

Not to interrupt....but back to the bed. There are 8 inch high 2 inch wide Oak beams that the bed sits on. These are held to the frame by large "U" bolts.

You can see the lateral beams in the pic below. The Fire Truck had a wood bed that the steel tank sat on that is why there is perpendicular wood supports and then the plank surface.

Complete restoration stuff is on my Fire Truck page.

Thanks to everyone for all the great information. Bill, there are some great pictures on your web site. So the cargo bed sits on the wood beams which are bolted to the frame. How is the cargo bed attached to the wood beams? The data plate for this truck says that it was a cargo w/o winch. There is an extra PTO output facing the rear. What is this for? Is it possible that transmission was from a dump model?

I am not completely sure how Cargo bodies fit to those wood rails as I do not have a Chevy Cargo.

I do have a CCKW split frame composite cargo body and the picture below will show you how the steel cross members bolt to the beams. I do not know if an all steel body is the same.

There are others on the list here who will know.

The Chevy cargo body rests on 2 wooden sleepers approx 2"thick by 3" wide I have a set for patterns . I could send you the exact dimensions and hole locations if you don't have a set.
The cargo bed is bolted at the rear, then there are 2 "U " bolts and also there are 2 prs of long bolts that assemble thru the tool box area, and lastly the front cross member is bolted with a spring/bolt to allow for chassis flex.
In all there are 4 fastening points on each side . And each pr is different .
I could E-Mail photos if they would help
Hope this helps

Gas tank on a G506

I got the truck transported to my place yesterday. There is 7 1/2" between the top of the frame and the bottom of the support rail on the cargo bed. There is that much rotten wood the extends from the back towards the front for 6'. It stops at that point. The truck has 8.50 tires on the back. So one of the first things to do is to cut off the cargo bed to sandblast and paint the bed and frame. Thanks
