Lifting GMC 270 Engine from CCKW

Post by warlock »

Hi guys,

for one of my scale modelling projects I am wondering how engines were lifted from a CCKW during WW2.
I read in the TM 9-801 that the engine should be pulled out with an engine sling "41-S-3832-7". Unfortunaly I can't find any pictures of this sling on the web.
On some pictures I have seen I can only guess, that there are some kind of loops on the engine block for lifting, but this seems to differ from engine to engine.

So the big question at the moment to me is : How does the lifting equipment look like and how was it connected to the engine block ?

Thanks a lot in advance !

Bye, Dirk

In TM 10-1563 it states:- Use chain falls in connection with suitable clamps ( under manifold on left hand side of engine and cylinder head on right hand side) to properly support and balance the engine as it is being removed. Valve rocker shaft hooks are suitable if properly used to prevent damage to rocker shaft.
No part numbers, photos or drawings accompany the text.
I would not have thought of lifting it with the rocker shaft.
That's all I have at the moment.
