Clutch grabs but truck won't go

Post by 6x6 Dinosaur »

As if I have enough problems with my truck now I have one were when I try to go from a stop the clutch will grab but the truck will not go and no amount of throttle will get it going and it dies. It seems the only way to have this not happen is to just be lucky but more often then not I'm not and its happening more often. Does anyone know what this is and how might I go about fixing it since I babbled about it and now I got a nonprofit who wants to use it for a 4th of July parade!

Need more info.

Does it happen in all gears including reverse?

Is the shaft from the trans to the transfer case rotating when you let the clutch out?

Once I get going its fine so first or second both do it it depending upon which gear I start in and reverse does do it too. I need to check the shaft with my dad since he is the one who helps me.Also I'm going to be gone for a week for medical reasons so I won't be able to work on the truck but I will still be able to read replys.

Being a newbie CCKW owner, I don't know a lot about these beasties yet. However, this sounds alot like a transmission that is getting stuck in two gears at one time.

I have yet to personally poke around inside the trans, but in the service manual I see the shift forks being held to the shift shafts by set screws. If one of these were to loosen up, it could account for this condition. I'm sure the guys on this forum with way more experience than me would have a good idea if this is a common failure mode, or not.

One way to to try to isolate the problem would be to put the transfer case in neutral when the problem occurs. If the engine still stalls when the clutch is released, you know the issue is probably in the transmission.

Best Regards...

II understand you: you let the clutch out, the truck doesn't move and the engine stalls. It does sound like it is going into two gears at the same time. Does it do it when you cross sideways through neutral?

Dr.Such when you say cross sideways do you mean putting the truck in neutral? It doesn't do this crap in neutral thank God but I still have to see if its stuck in two gears as I'm still in the hospital but i get out tomorrow.
