Great Article about issues with E-90

Post by Bill_Wolf »

A great article from Bob Muller via Military Vehicles Magazine about Vapor lock. It also discusses E-90 issues which pertain to all vehicles and gasoline powered equipment.

Scarey stuff. Wait until they jam E-85 down our throats.

Bill;
I think you mean E-10 not E-90.
Although not mentioned in the excellant article, another tip I might add is adding 2 cycle motor oil to the gas, using a 100 to 1 ratio. I had to deal with a stuck intake valve on one of my engines thanks to E-10 that had cystalized on the valve stem. Others have suggested using Marvel mystery oil, but 2 cycle oil is much cheaper. I buy it by the quart. One of the side advantages is that the oil will leave a coating on the inside of your gas tank and keeping rusting issues at bay. Why do you think new cars have plastic fuel tanks. My trucks do not smoke at all using this mixture ratio.

The 2 stroke oil alternative is a good idea John. I will try it this spring.

When I worked for GM they called the current fuel E-90 and the Flex fuel vehicles were called E-85. However with more research you are correct the term is now E-10.

As this continues to be brought into the light I have noticed that every manufacturer of Lawn and Garden, Boats, Generators, Chainsaws, weedwhackers, and every other piece of internal combustion equipment clearly states that their brand new engines are "not compatible with more than 10% ethanol blend". Looks like we are being pushed back to the stone age.

Unless we switch to LNG these old trucks won't be with us much longer.

Bill;

On our fleet of police cars, specifically the Ford Crown Vics, they are flex fuel E-85 with the yellow gas cap. I actually read the owners manual which stated "If the fuel tank is near empty, do not fill more the half full with E-85, the remainder must be E-10" "A significant reduction in performance/driveability will result."

Thank God, here in Germany we can still choose from E5 or E10 at every gas station. There are still too many cars out there that would ruin their engines with E10 including mine (12 year old Alfa Romeo). But E5 is more expensive. :(
