Freeze Plug Size in 270 Motor

Post by renovate7 »

I've got a leaky freeze plug in a 270 motor in a DUKW. The book calls for a 1 7/32 plug. When I tried to install one it was REALLY tight and only went about an eighth of an inch past where the radius ends and the straight side begins. Before I take a BFH and try to get it all the way in I was hopeing someone who has done this before could offer some insight.

Thanks for the video link. I was hitting way harder than that and it didn't want to go in. I think I'm going to get a rotary wire brush to clean out the hole and see if that helps. Also learned from the video, I'm going to get a socket that goes inside the plug rather than sitting on the edge. Will report in results.

Great Video.

Never knew that installation tool existed.

A great tool to have is a Dremel tool. Put the small brush wheel on it will clean it right up.

Have done freeze plugs before on other cars. Make sure you shop vac the hole to get the crud out of the block that fell off the back of the freeze plug.

Bill,I want to know you an opinion about another subject. These days ago I wanted to turn the rear axles in order to adjust the brake shoes.Put the transmission in neutral position and did not get to turn.I only get to turn it when jacking up both rear axle sides. Is it correct? :?

Yes, both rear axles (one side) have to be off of the grouns so that they can turn. Both rear axles are hard connected to each other (4WD) through the xfer cast. This is why it is VERY important to have matched tires on the rear

I managed to get the freeze plug in. Took a Dremel with a wire brush and cleaned up the hole. Put some non-hardening Permatex 2A on the plug and a socket inside it and drove it in. Not quite as easy as in the above video (thanks for that!) but i was only using a 14 oz hammer.
